Course Purpose

The 'Understanding & Fulfilling the Role of the GMR 2.1' is a four-day short course that aims to increase the competency of maintenance and operation personnel appointed or on track to be appointed as GMR 2.1 or 2.7.

By the end of the short course, the attendees will gain the key knowledge, insights, tools, and resources to help them successfully fulfill the role of the GMR 2.1 appointee.

Learning outcomes

After completing the short course, the candidates will:

  • Have a fundamental understanding of the context of the GMR 2.1 role
  • Gain a practical understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a GMR 2.1 appointee
  • Develop a holistic approach to applicable legislation and their amendments
  • Develop an understanding of the procedures and processes affecting the GMR 2.1 appointee
  • Gain insights into safety-related issues
  • Gain a practical understanding of the maintenance function of the GMR 2.1 appointee
  • Understand the fundamentals of having a functional management system

Admission requirements

  • Open enrolment
  • Literacy and numeracy at NQF Level 5 or equivalent is recommended

  • GMR 2.1 or 2.7 appointees
  • Certificated Engineers
  • Maintenance & Operations engineers and technicians
  • Managers assigned (in terms of section 16(2)) to assist the GMR 2.1 appointees
  • Supervisors and foremen
