Where can I write the GCC exam?

GCC Factories and GCC Mines & Works Candidates can write GCC exams at approved TVET Colleges across South Africa. The GCC exams are written every year during June and November.


TVET stands for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. TVET Colleges fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Approved TVET Colleges


The Department of Mineral Resources & Energy (DMR) has published a list of approved GCC Mines & Works exam centers. These include the following:


Gauteng:

Kwazulu-Natal:

Mpumalanga:

Eastern Cape:

Free State:

  • Goldfields TVET College, Welkom Campus (Note: The Welkom Campus has indicated they no longer administer the GCC Exams)

Limpopo:

North West:

Northern Cape:

Western Cape:

The Department of Employment and Labour (DOL) uses the same exam venues as above. In addition to the above, the GCC Factories has additional exam venues, which are:

GCC Factories and GCC Mines & Works Candidates need to contact their nearest TVET College to enquire about exam registration logistics.

Context of the GCC exams


The type of GCC exams written depends on which GCC certificate the Candidate is pursuing.

In South Africa, there are two types of GCC certificates:

  • The first GCC certificate is the GCC Factories, which requires Candidates to write the plant engineering and OHS Act exams. The Department of Employment and Labour administers the GCC Factories certification process.

  • The second type of GCC certificate is the GCC Mines & Works (or GCC Mining), which requires Candidates to write the plant engineering and Legal Knowledge exams. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy administers the GCC Mines & Works certification process.


The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is responsible for administrating the GCC Factories and GCC Mines & Works exams. The registration and writing of the GCC Factories and GCC Mines & Works exams is the work scope for DHET.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMR) has sixteen approve GCC Mines & Works exam centers in South Africa. GCC Mines & Works Candidates must write their exams at the approved GCC exam centers.


The Department of Employment and Labour (DOL) has eighteen approved GCC Factories exam centers in South Africa. The GCC Factories Candidates use the same sixteen exam centers as GCC Mines & Works Candidates. The GCC Factories Candidates do have two additional centers in Gauteng province, which brings the total to eighteen GCC Factories exam centers in South Africa. GCC Factories Candidates must write their exams at the approved GCC exam centers.


It is essential to have the right context of the GCC exams. The proper context will provide a clear picture of the type of exam that GCC Candidates need to write depending on which GCC certification they are pursuing.


Another essential consideration is obtaining the GCC Factories compared to getting the GCC Mines & Works. It is necessary to understand this consideration because the steps involved differ.
